About Us
Josey Effect is owned and operated by Tenaj Josey , a Bahamian born Jamaican who founded the company in August 2021 Amid the rampant COVID-19 Pandemic.
Only 3 months after her birth Josey was brought to Brooklyn by her 22 year old mother along with her 1 year old brother.
Unable to work and care for 2 young babies at home, the young mom had to make the heartbreaking decision to separate herself from her children. They were sent back to her home country of Jamaica to be raised by her parents. This was the fate for many Caribbean women in order to provide for their children and families.
What gave her solace was knowing that her children would receive nothing less than unconditional love in a supportive environment.
From an early age young Josey, being raised by her seamstress grandmother, expressed her love for fashion through her Dolls. Not excluding banana leaves or whatever greenery she could find on her grandparents’s countryside property, she would make clothes out of them.
Her love for fashion and dressing up was always apparent. So much so, it was commented by neighbors that the family was showing her favoritism by dressing her better than her cousins, unbeknownst to the fact that it was Josey herself, nicknamed Ten Ten ,by her brother as a toddler, who was curating her outfits.
Being raised in the countryside on a farm own by her grandparents, she developed a love for nature often helping her grandfather whom she called Papa with his chores. Despite her love for dressing up, Josey was very much a tomboy. She would often wear her cousins boxers and shorts to play in her close knit community.
Her versatile taste in fashion is very much apparent in her current collection “Destination: Cabarita” curated to express her love and admiration of her Jamaican upbringing.
With no experience and knowledge of the fashion industry, she took a leap of faith and betted on herself, sketching out her own designs.
Inspired by Jamaica’s history, community landmarks and the dancehall culture, she set out to reenforce the vibrant culture, beauty of its native people and Jamaicans’ admiration for their women’s bodies no matter what tone or shape.
